In the first quarter of 2023, Abfallwirtschaftsbetrieb Landkreis Ahrweiler (AWB) commissioned pbo with the general planning services for a new biowaste composting and fermentation plant. The design planning was completed in September 2024. The selected plant concept features innovative components, meaning that an application for funding could also be submitted under the “Investive, municipal climate protection model projects” funding program. The submitted project outline is currently being evaluated.
Brief definition of the funding outline: The district of Ahrweiler intends to build a new biowaste treatment plant, consisting of a fermentation and a composting section, for the treatment of 30,000 Mg of biowaste per year. For this purpose, an innovative process concept is to be implemented that will achieve a climate benefit of around 40,000 Mg CO2 equivalents over the effective life of the investment through the first holistic combination of approaches to wastewater-free operation, intelligent biogas utilization through electricity generation in CHP units and complete utilization of the resulting thermal energy. At the same time, the project will serve as a model for a large number of other waste management companies.
