Bioabfall Kompostierung – Sachsen-Anhalt Süd GmbH (Bio Komp-SAS) operates a biowaste fermentation plant with subsequent composting at the Weißenfels site. pbo has been entrusted with the general planning services (service specifications §43 HOAI Engineering Structures and §55 HOAI Technical Equipment) for a biomass combustion plant. Within the scope of service phase 1 to 3, we were able to develop an innovative and forward-looking approach, making it possible to apply for a “climate-relevant model project”.
On 15.08.2024, both sub-projects – detailed below – were approved by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection, releasing several million euros in funding. The climate benefit is calculated at around 85,000 Mg CO2 equivalents over the duration of the investment.
Brief description: The planned innovative concept is applicable to all sites where solid biomass is produced and biogases are generated by fermentation and composting plants. The aim is to use the gases (CO2 and CH4) provided by the biomass and the biomass available as solid matter as regionally and economically viable as possible. The overall concept consists of two sub-projects in which the integrated operation of three plants is to be realized:
Sub-project A (TV A) – NE-KW-A:
- – Biomass combustion plant with integration of a micro steam turbine for climate-neutral coverage of the site’s own heat requirements with maximum efficiency
- – Biogas upgrading plant to refine the biogas produced at the site into raw biomethane and
Sub-project B (TV B) – NE-KW-B:
- – Carbon dioxide liquefaction plant to utilize the bio-CO2 produced at the site
After processing by a network operator, the raw biomethane will be fed into the natural gas network as a climate-neutral energy source. Until now, the biogas at the Weißenfels site has been used to generate energy in combined heat and power plants (CHP), with the resulting CO2 being released into the atmosphere – climate-neutral, as it is made from biogenic source material.
