Redevelopment of Cologne shooting range

Project period

2014 until 2015

Client

City of Cologne – Environmental and Consumer Protection Office

Task and implementation

For decades, a shooting range was operated at the Alter Deutzer Postweg in Cologne. At the time of its closure, the soils around the former shooting ranges showed significant contamination with lead, PAH*, arsenic and antimony. The city of Cologne commissioned us to plan a comprehensive remediation of the contaminated site.

First, all trees on the site were felled and tree trunks and branches were removed by machine. In the next step, the soil with the remaining tree stumps and roots was milled, then the contaminated soil layers were taken up over a large area and relocated in a securing structure. This was sealed with a plastic sealing membrane and covered with recultivation soil. An infiltration trench was constructed for the drainage of rainwater. Finally, the rehabilitated areas were afforested.

Project data

  • Clearing of a forest area of approx. 3.5 ha
  • Using a rotary hoe to work the contaminated soil including tree stumps and roots
  • Excavation of approx. 16,000 m³ of soil material and relocation in a securing structure
  • Waterproofing of the retaining structure with plastic waterproofing membrane and drainage mat
  • Installation of approx. 5,500 m³ recultivation soil
  • Construction of a drainage trench and infiltration system
